Franklyn G. Musgrave was born to Inez Lucina Clarke and William Franklyn Musgrave in Basseterre, St. Kitts, Eastern Caribbean. He received his early education at the Newtown Infants’ and Basseterre Boys’ Schools. On completion of the then 7th standard at the early age of 13 he entered government service as a pupil teacher and subsequently the then Cunningham Hospital, (the forerunner of the J N France Hospital), as a dispenser druggist in training in the civil service.
Shortly after qualifying as a chemist and druggist he left St. Kitts to pursue premedical studies in Montreal, Canada at St. George Williams University (now Concordia University) graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He would later enter medical school at Howard University in Washington, DC graduating with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. On completion of his Doctor of Medicine degree, he was then accepted to pursue post-graduate studies/a residency program, specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ob/Gyn) at Georgetown University in Washington, DC and was in the final year of said residency named Chief Resident.
Upon completion of his specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Musgrave operated a private practice in Washington, DC in conjunction with an appointment as a Medical Officer in Ob/Gyn in the DC government’s commission on public health. His charge in part, in this capacity to support an effort the Barry administration championed to reduce the staggering infant mortality rate. He has held the appointment of Clinical Instructor, Department of Ob/Gyn, Georgetown University Hospital and in addition has had affiliations with Howard University Hospital, DC General Hospital, Washington Hospital Center and Providence Hospital.
Dr. Musgrave holds licenses to practice in Washington, DC, the State of Florida and the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis and has held memberships in the District of Columbia Medical Society, the National Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Medical Chirurgical Society of the District of Columbia, the District of Columbia’s Doctors’ Council, the John Queenan Obstetrical and Gynecological Society and life member Howard University Medical Alumni Association among others.
Listed among his activities, founding member and 1st president of the St. Kitts and Nevis Nationals Association of Washington, DC, past president of the Association of Clinical Physicians of the District of Columbia, past vice-president of the Doctors Council of the District of Columbia, member of the judiciary committee of the District of Columbia Medical Society, member of the District of Columbia mayor’s advisory board on infant mortality and member of the speakers bureau of the District of Columbia Medical Society.
His community service and citations include medical liaison to the hurricane support group of the Embassy of St. Kitts and Nevis, Washington, DC; contributions to the Special Olympics team of St. Kitts and Nevis; the Kittitian-American Benevolent Association (KABA); gynecological physician resource for the Gray Panthers of Washington, DC; gynecological physician advisor for the job corps youth program Washington, DC; gynecologist and obstetrician to St. Anne’s Home for Unwed Mothers Washington, DC; DC Southwest Health Center’s Committee on Children’s Christmas chair; excellence in teaching by the nursing tutor of the J N France Hospital, St. Kitts; excellence in teaching by the director of nursing Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC; and cited by the mayor of Washington DC for dedication to improving the healthcare of women.
Dr. Musgrave is the proud father of two sons Franklyn, Jr., an Assistant Attorney General of the State of Maryland, married to Jasmine King-Musgrave with two sons Franklyn G. III and one on the way; and Ian a physician engaged in the practice of internal medicine in Tampa, Fl.
